Becoming More Hipster- There's an App for That!

I have NO idea why hipsters choose to use such mainstream products, but it is an undeniable fact- hipsters LOVE Apple. Whether it is an iPod, MacBook, iPad, or iPhone, they probably have one. This is the easiest way for them to be counter-culture (by rejecting Microsoft, of course!), and thus the easiest way to become even more hipster. I think Apple has capitalized on this huge client base by creating apps that make it even easier to be a hipster. Here are a few examples of these apps:

1. Brushes- you can turn your iPad into a customized canvas.
2. BandNamer- this is a rock-band name generator so every hipster can have a unique and inspiring band name.
3. Shazam- start this app while any song is playing and it will tell you the artist, album, year, etc. This is for hipsters who want to show off their music knowledge to impress their friends but who can't seem to remember the name of that one song.....
4. Pocket Hipster- you can listen to music recommendations from fellow hipsters and be on top of what new indie bands are coming into the scene. Similar music apps include Daytrotter, Gigkick, and Gimme Indie Music, but these do not come with hipster jokes and cartoon drawings of hipsters.
5. PBRmeASAP- you can get a bird-eye-view of every bar in your area that sells Pabst Blue Ribbon, every hipster's favorite beer. If this app doesn't convince you Apple is catering to hipsters, I don't know what will.

There are also apps to help you figure out what local bands are playing, upload your pictures straight to black and white, and let you read that new book you've been wanting to read.

"This black nail polish goes so well with my new white MacBook."

While hipsters will use just about any Apple product, you will never see one wearing the Apple brand headphones that come with each purchase. This is probably because they are the only thing that you can't customize, and are therefore rejected. They might claim that these large headphones are needed to experience each song to its fullest while expressing themselves, but they are really just trying to fit in in the hipster world.

Lucky for you is that you are a pop-culture-loving hipster and therefore do not have to follow these rules. You can have your iPod and use the extremely effective and free headphones too! If you have never used Apple products, don't worry- they are much easier to use than you might think. While they may be expensive, I recommend switching whenever you have a chance- they are really are great for organizing your life, listening to music, keeping up with the latest and the greatest, and, most importantly, you will look and feel more hipster!

Fleet Foxes

"Look at the symbolism in these triangles!"

"Goats in a music video? How innovative!"

"The subtle selective coloring and lighting are really what make this video."

Selective Coloring

Hipsters have a love for just about anything with selective coloring. Selective coloring is where a black and white picture contains splashes of color on selected items to make them stand out more. Here are a few examples of selective coloring:

You can learn how to do your own selective coloring by watching this youtube video:

Once you have mastered the art of selective coloring, you can create your own original pictures and use them on Facebook, as room decorations, etc. Not only will you feel an incredible sense of accomplishment, but your friends will be impressed by how hipster you are!

Rule Number One: Always Dress Like the Weather Doesn't Matter

Why is it that hipsters always seem to be wearing multiple layers of clothing? Not only do they wear a lot of clothing, but it is usually the same types of clothing. Because of this, it is usually easy to identify them by their particular clothing style. There are a few staple items to any hipster wardrobe:

1. Skinny jeans that are 3 sizes too small
2. A scarf wrapped around multiple times
3. Shoes that cover most of your foot
4. A t-shirt with either a logo of something no one has ever heard of or some kind of graphic pun
5. A zip-up jacket or blazer

One thing that is very important to remember is that this everyday outfit DOES. NOT. CHANGE. Whether it is the Fourth of July or New Years Eve, you can count on any true hipster wearing this combination of clothing. The only difference to their outfits, and the only way you can tell what the weather is like outside, is their coffee. If they are drinking iced coffee, it usually indicates that it is hot outside, while hot coffee means it is probably freezing cold.

So while the weather may be too mainstream for hipsters to care about, us mainstreamers actually care that we are sweating profusely under our layers of clothing on a hot day. Here are a few tips for dressing mainstream in the hipster world:

1. Always shop at places that feature hipsters in their magazines/on their websites. Good examples of such stores are Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, etc.
2. Never be afraid to wear something new, and never give up on a new style just because it didn't work the first time.
3. Accessories and shoes matter. You can make any outfit more hipster by adding strappy, Gladiator shoes (for girls) or Vans/Converse (for boys) and accessorizing with a pair of plastic Ray-Ban knock offs and a cool hat.
4. Be confident! Let your inner hipster convince you that you can rock any look because you just don't care what the world thinks.

The Golden Rules of Being Mainstream in a Hipster World

Let's face it, not everyone is cut out to be a true hipster. But good news for you is that there are mainstream aspects of the hipster world that just about everyone can identify with! My blog will help identify the similarities between these two completely opposite worlds while helping us mainstream folk discover the "hipster within." However, there are two golden rules you must follow while you are discovering your inner hipster:

1.  Never try to label yourself as a hipster. Just because you love vintage clothing or folk music does not make you a hipster.
2. Never try to label a hipster. They hate labels as much as they hate hearing songs they discovered on the radio.

If you follow these simple rules, you will be ready to step out of the popular world as defined by E and People Magazine and venture into the mainstream hipster world!
